The Scottish Shutter Company Window Shutter Warranty

Window shutters installed by The Scottish Shutter Company

Our Warranty to You: Shutter Warranty

As S:CRAFT’s only authorised MasterPartner in Scotland, we’re dedicated to bringing you premium-quality shutters and exceptional customer service. Our shutters are crafted to the highest standards and designed to enhance your home for years. To give you complete peace of mind, your S:CRAFT shutters carry a comprehensive 5-year manufacturer warranty against defects in materials and workmanship from the date of installation.

This guarantee applies as long as the shutters were installed by The Scottish Shutter Company and made exclusively with S:CRAFT’s original materials and components. Please note that the warranty is for you as the original purchaser, so it does not transfer if the shutters are resold, transferred to another person, or if you sell your home, but in practice, if we made and fitted your shutters, we’ll always do our best to help.

What’s Covered

If your shutters have a defect, we will repair or remake the affected parts to ensure they remain in excellent condition. Repairs will be completed using similar or matching materials to maintain the shutters’ style and functionality.

Here’s what is included under the warranty:

  • Repairs or remakes for defects in materials or workmanship.
  • Replacement of any parts or components that fail within the warranty period, as detailed below.

However, some costs and scenarios are not included, such as:

  • Costs associated with removing or reinstalling shutters, although we cover labour and travel ourselves for the first year. See below.
  • Shipping charges for replacement parts or repaired components.

What’s Not Covered

While our shutters are built to last, there are some situations where the warranty does not apply. These include:

  • Damage caused by accidents, malicious damage, misuse, unauthorised repairs, alterations, or natural wear and tear.
  • Issues resulting from failure to follow our cleaning, care, or maintenance instructions.
  • Conditions arising from improper care, such as exposure to unsuitable cleaning agents or harsh chemicals.
  • Variations in colour, grain, or texture that occur naturally in the materials are part of what makes your shutters unique and are not considered defects.

In addition, please be aware of the following:

  • Using unauthorised replacement parts or having repairs carried out by someone other than The Scottish Shutter Company or an approved technician will void the warranty.
  • Returns cannot be accepted due to natural variations in the materials’ appearance.

Warranty Periods

We guarantee everything we supply and install for five years. Manufacturers set their own periods, and some of them are shorter than ours. Where that happens we carry the difference ourselves rather than pass it to you.

  • Colour fastness: 5 years, on every finish
  • Structure: 5 years
  • Hardware: 5 years. Hinges, tilt mechanisms and all moving parts
  • Motors and handsets: 3 years on S:CRAFT, 5 years on Luxaflex

Motors are the one exception to our five years. On a motorised shutter we offer exactly what the motor manufacturer offers, no more and no less, because the motor is an electrical component we don’t make ourselves.

In practice that rarely arises. We fit very few motorised shutters, so for almost every shutter we install the answer is simply five years on everything.

Labour and Travel

The periods above are our cover, not the manufacturer’s. They cover the parts. The labour is ours as well.

For the first year after installation, we cover all labour and travel associated with a warranty claim. There’s no call-out charge. The person who comes out to put it right is one of our own employees, not a subcontractor.

Like the rest of the guarantee, this is for you as the original purchaser. It doesn’t pass to a new owner if you sell the house.

After the Guarantee Ends

We don’t make shutters or blinds. We buy them from manufacturers and we fit them. Once the guarantee period has ended we can’t promise to put a problem right.

No manufacturer guarantees to carry out a repair, or to keep spare parts available, beyond the guarantee period. If a component is no longer made, it can’t be replaced.

Custom-Made for You

Your shutters are custom-made to suit your home, ensuring a perfect fit and beautiful finish. This personalisation level means that cancellations cannot be accepted once an order is placed.

If you need to make any changes to your order, please contact us as soon as possible. Changes can typically only be made within 3 hours of the order reaching the factory. Once production begins, no further changes can be made, and the full value of the order will apply.

Whether you choose classic white shutters or a wood-stained finish, your S:CRAFT shutters will add value and elegance to your home.

Caring for Your Shutters

Regular care and maintenance are essential to ensure your shutters stay in great condition. Dust your shutters regularly using a soft cloth or duster, and clean them gently with a damp cloth if needed. Avoid using harsh chemicals or abrasive materials, as these can damage the finish. If your shutters are motorised, follow the manufacturer’s guidelines for maintaining the motors to keep them operating smoothly.

For any advice on care or maintenance, our team is always happy to help.

Installation Warranty

When purchasing anything to be fitted in your home or commercial premises, it is wise to check that the company and or individuals carrying out the work hold sufficient insurance cover for your protection. In our industry, many apparent company representatives are, in fact, self-employed and the installation element of the fitting becomes a separate contract between you and whoever is carrying out the work. They may or may not carry sufficient insurance cover.

At the Scottish Shutter Company, everyone you have contact with is a full-time employee of the Company. The contract to supply and install your shutters is with Rocknowe Interiors Ltd., trading as The Scottish Shutter Company. The Company and our employees are covered by our Company’s insurance policy, a summary of which is attached.

We have a £5 million cover for public liability (i.e. to you, our customer).

Also, even though we do not directly make the products we sell, we still carry a £5 million product liability. As employers, we have £10 million of cover.

Hopefully, it will be comforting to know that you are dealing with a professional window blind and shutter company, The Scottish Shutter Company.

Ultraviolet Bleaching & Fading

Window shutters are the first line of defence against the sun’s harsh rays and, particularly, against ultraviolet light (UV). This (invisible) light causes most of the bleaching of your soft furnishings. It’s not just on sunny days, though. Colour fading occurs on most surfaces when exposed to natural daylight.  Visible light and solar heat also cause objects to fade over time.

The technical term for this fading is photodegradation.

There is a misconception that glass reduces unwanted radiation. Clear glass actually admits over 70% of the sun’s UV rays into a room and onto your shutters. Even highly efficient energy-efficient windows will only reduce this to around 60%.

Unlike most window shutters, SSC window shutters are coated with a UV resist to help reduce the effects of the sun on the actual shutters themselves.

However, the UV-resist coating can best be described as a resist. Nothing under the sun can ever be fully UV-proof.

You can help reduce the effects of UV on your shutters by regularly varying the angle of the louvres and occasionally wrapping the panels back into the room. However, remember that if you do wrap the panels back, the ultraviolet light will then be able to reach the soft furnishings in your home. Most of these do not come equipped with a UV-resist as your SSC shutters do.

The solar heat produced by the sun also has an effect on your shutters over time.

A trademarked wood drying technique dries the wood used to manufacture our shutters to emulate the environmental conditions of the location where the shutters will be installed here in the UK. This practice also reduces post-installation shrinking and swelling. However, over many years the wood will change its look.
