The Concept
What is Shutter 'n Shade?
Shutter 'n Shade is a single integrated product, not two separate items fitted together. A room darkening blind is built into the shutter frame itself, travelling in its own dedicated side channels. The whole unit arrives from the factory as one piece, designed and manufactured to work together. The shutter panels can be louvred or solid, depending on your preference.
During the day, the shutter does all the work. Tilt the louvres for light and privacy, or enjoy the clean surface of a solid panel. The integrated blind stays retracted, completely hidden within the frame. At night, or any time you need near total darkness, pull the blind down behind the closed shutter. Two layers of material between you and the outside world. Light reduction of 95% or more.
For certain windows where the recess depth is sufficient and the handle protrusion is minimal, we can also install a Luxaflex Duette motorised cellular blind in a room darkening fabric behind the shutters. Duette honeycomb shades are A++ energy rated, adding thermal insulation and noise reduction beyond what the shutter alone provides. South Facing Rooms
Direct sun heats a room fast. The shutter louvres redirect some of the light, but the Duette honeycomb blind behind adds a thermal barrier that reduces heat gain significantly. Two layers working together outperform either one alone.
East Facing Bedrooms
In a Scottish summer, east facing bedrooms get the earliest and brightest morning sun. Shutter 'n Shade keeps you sleeping while the sun rises, then gives you a beautiful, light filled room when you open up.
Honest Expectations
Room darkening, not a sealed box
We say room darkening deliberately. No retrofit window covering achieves absolute 100% light elimination. That would require architectural cavities, sealed frames, and no gaps whatsoever. It is not what a shutter and blind combination does.
What Shutter 'n Shade does achieve is 95% or more light reduction. In practice, that means a room that is dark enough to sleep in comfortably at any time of day. Dark enough for a toddler to nap at lunchtime. Dark enough to watch a film without glare. The small amount of residual light around frame edges is not visible to most people once they are in bed.
We would rather set the right expectation and overdeliver than promise something that is not physically possible. That is why we use the term room darkening across everything we do.
How It Works
One product, two layers of control
Shutter 'n Shade arrives from the factory as a single integrated unit. The blind is built into the shutter frame with its own side channels. Nothing is retrofitted or bolted on afterwards.
We measure your windows
Our surveyor measures the window and discusses whether louvred or solid panels suit the room. The shutter style, colour, louvre size, and blind fabric are all specified together as one order.
Manufactured as one integrated unit
The shutter frame, panels, and room darkening blind are manufactured together. The blind travels in dedicated side channels built into the frame. It is one product, not two.
Fitted by our own team
Our installers fit the complete unit into your window. The shutter louvres tilt by hand. The blind operates independently. Use the shutter alone during the day. Pull the blind down when you need darkness.
Your Options
Shutter and blind combinations
Shutter 'n Shade is available with louvred panels or solid panels. Louvred gives you adjustable light control during the day with room darkening when the blind is deployed. Solid gives you the maximum possible light reduction: no louvres, no gaps, just a continuous panel of hardwood plus the blind behind it. Both options are available in our full range of materials, colours, and louvre sizes.
For certain windows, we can go further.
