Seven specialists, no salespeople, and an innovation award

We have been named a finalist for Best Innovation at the National Entrepreneur Awards, and the winners are announced on stage in Birmingham on 7 September.

Which invites a perfectly fair question from anyone who came here to read about shutters. What has that got to do with your windows?

The answer starts with something we are rather proud of. We are a team of seven specialists, and we have never employed a salesperson. Not one, in the whole history of the company, and we never will. When you talk to us you are talking to somebody who knows the product, and nobody in this company is paid to close you.

Why we did this

The people who are genuinely good at this work are rare.

Reading a difficult window, calculating solar gain properly, specifying a shaped blind for an apex that is not quite the angle the customer thinks it is, these are not things you can hire for easily. There is no queue of qualified shading specialists waiting for a phone call in Scotland. We know, because we have looked.

At the same time the demand for exactly that expertise is climbing, and climbing quickly. More glass in modern homes, hotter summers, and far better informed customers asking far harder questions than they did ten years ago.

So we had a choice. Either we get slower and more selective as demand grows, or we make the seven specialists we already have considerably more effective. We chose the second, and that is what the award is actually for.

What the machine does, and what it does not

It does the arithmetic.

Shading calculations, solar gain, and pricing for made to measure work are where the hours go and where the mistakes happen. A shaped gable end, an apex window, an angled roof light, the tall triangular glass in a converted barn: these are priced from hundreds of separate manufacturer tables across ranges, fabrics and dimensions, and one wrong cell costs real money and real goodwill.

That work used to take up to four hours for a single complicated window. It now takes twenty to thirty minutes, and it is more accurate, because the checking is exhaustive rather than dependent on how late in the day it happens to be.

What it does not do is decide. There is a person in the loop at every point that matters, without exception.

Your survey is carried out in person, in your home, by one of our own team. Your installation is done by our own fitters, employed by us, not subcontracted to whoever is free that week. And every quotation that reaches you has been read and approved by a specialist before it was sent. The system drafts, a person decides, and only then does anything happen.

That gate is deliberate. For a company working in other people’s homes, it is the architecture rather than a nicety.

What you actually notice

You get an answer on an awkward window in days rather than weeks, the number you are given is the number that holds, and the answer goes deeper than you might expect.

Because nobody here works to a sales target, we are also free to tell you when something is a bad idea. One homeowner asked us about external shading this summer. We told her it was the wrong answer for her house, explained at length why, and talked ourselves out of the sale in the process. She wrote back to say it had been an uplifting experience. Our family has been styling Scotland’s windows since 1987, and a shutter and blind company is all we are, first and always. Seven specialists covering everything from Shetland to the north of England simply have to be efficient.

Does this mean my quotation is written by a computer? No. The system does the shading calculations and the pricing arithmetic, and one of our specialists reads and approves every quotation before it is sent. Nothing reaches you unchecked.

Will I still get a home visit? Yes. Every survey is carried out in person, in your home, by one of our own team, and every installation is done by our own fitters rather than subcontractors. That has not changed and is not going to.

Will I be sold to? No. The Scottish Shutter Company has never employed a salesperson and never will. Nobody here works to a sales target, which is why we will tell you when a product is wrong for your house.

Why does a shutter company need AI at all? Because specialists in solar shading are genuinely hard to find, and demand for that expertise is rising. Rather than turn work away or get slower, we use AI to take the lengthy calculations off our seven specialists so they can spend their time on the parts that need judgement.

How does this affect the price I pay? It does not make our shutters cheaper or dearer. What it changes is how quickly and how accurately we can price a complicated window, particularly shaped and angled ones.
