The Problem We Solve

Too hot in summer, too cold in winter

Conservatories are one of the most popular home additions in Scotland, and one of the most underused. The problem is always the same. In summer the glass traps heat and turns the room into a greenhouse. In winter the same glass loses heat rapidly and the room becomes too cold to sit in comfortably. For much of the year the conservatory sits empty, used as little more than a passageway to the garden.

Cellular blinds address this directly. The honeycomb structure of the fabric traps insulating air between you and the glass, reducing heat gain in summer and heat loss in winter. The effect is significant. Conservatories that were unusable for six months of the year become comfortable living spaces with the blinds fitted.

Unlike curtains or roller blinds, cellular blinds are engineered specifically for overhead and angled glazing. Each panel of your conservatory roof gets its own blind, running on guide wires at whatever pitch the roof sits at. They operate smoothly from horizontal to near vertical, and because they are motorised, you control them from a remote, a wall switch, or your phone.

Complete Conservatory Solutions

Roof blinds and side blinds working together

Most conservatories need blinds on both the roof and the side windows. We fit both as a coordinated system.

Conservatory Roof Blinds

The roof is where the biggest difference is made. Each roof panel gets its own motorised cellular blind running on tensioned guide wires. The honeycomb cells trap insulating air, dramatically reducing heat transfer through the glass. Operate them individually or as a group with a single button press.

  • Motorised with Somfy IO or mains powered motors
  • Works at any roof pitch from horizontal to steep
  • Translucent or room darkening fabric options
  • A++ thermal insulation rating

Conservatory Side Blinds

The side windows control privacy and low angle sun. We fit Luxaflex Duette cellular blinds to the vertical glazing, giving you the same insulating honeycomb fabric as the roof blinds in a coordinating colour. PowerView motorisation means no cords and full smart home integration.

  • Luxaflex Duette with PowerView motorisation
  • Top down, bottom up for privacy without losing light
  • Coordinating fabrics with roof blinds
  • Cord free for child safety

The Technology

Why honeycomb cellular blinds are the right choice for conservatories

Conservatory roofs present challenges that standard blinds cannot handle. The glazing is overhead, often at a steep pitch, and the temperature extremes are more severe than in any other room. Honeycomb cellular blinds were designed specifically for these conditions.

The fabric is structured as a series of cells, each one trapping a pocket of still air. This trapped air acts as insulation, slowing heat transfer through the glass in both directions. In summer it reduces the greenhouse effect that makes conservatories unbearable. In winter it helps retain warmth so the room stays comfortable for longer after the heating goes off.

The fabric runs on tensioned guide wires that hold it close to the glass at any angle. Unlike a roller blind that sags when fitted overhead, a cellular blind stays taut against the glazing whether the roof panel is near horizontal or steeply pitched. When retracted, the fabric pleats stack neatly at the top of each panel, virtually disappearing from view.

We offer translucent fabrics that filter light beautifully while reducing heat, and room darkening fabrics for conservatories used as dining rooms, TV rooms, or home offices where glare control is critical.

Benefits

What conservatory blinds do for your home

Temperature Control

The honeycomb cells insulate your conservatory from both heat gain and heat loss. The room stays cooler in summer and warmer in winter, extending the usable season by months in both directions.

Glare Reduction

Overhead sun through a glass roof creates harsh, direct glare that makes the room uncomfortable. Cellular blinds diffuse the light, turning it from a problem into an asset. Soft, even light throughout the room.

UV Protection

Ultraviolet light bleaches fabrics, fades furniture, and damages flooring. In a conservatory the glass exposure is far greater than in a standard room. Cellular blinds filter UV radiation, protecting your furnishings from premature ageing.

Motorised Convenience

Conservatory roof blinds are out of reach by design. Motorisation is not a luxury, it is a necessity. Operate all your roof panels with a single remote, a wall switch, or from your phone. Schedule them to close automatically when the sun is strongest.

Smart Home Ready

Integrate with Apple HomeKit, Amazon Alexa, or Google Home via Somfy TaHoma. Create scenes, set schedules, and control your conservatory blinds alongside the rest of your smart home.

Child Safety

Motorised blinds have no cords, no chains, and no accessible mechanisms. They are the safest window covering for conservatories in homes with young children and pets.

All Conservatory Styles

We fit blinds to every type of conservatory

Whether you have a Victorian, Edwardian, lean to, P shaped, T shaped, or a modern orangery style conservatory, we have fitted blinds to them all. The system is the same: each roof panel gets its own motorised blind, measured and manufactured to fit the exact dimensions and angles of your structure.

Victorian conservatories with their faceted roofs are our most common installation. The triangular and trapezoidal panels each get a shaped blind that follows the glazing bar geometry precisely. Edwardian conservatories with their rectangular roof panels are more straightforward but benefit equally from the insulation and light control.

For orangeries and flat roof extensions, we fit roof lantern blinds to the glazed section. These use the same cellular fabric but in a system designed specifically for flat or low pitch overhead glazing. See our lantern blind guide.

Making the Right Choice

Conservatory blinds, shutters, or both?

We install both conservatory blinds and conservatory shutters, and many of our clients choose a combination. The two products solve different problems and work well together.

Blinds are the right answer for the roof. No other product handles overhead angled glazing as effectively. The cellular fabric insulates, the motorisation gives you effortless control, and the blinds retract completely when you want full sky views.

Shutters are often the better answer for the side windows. They stay in the window permanently and give you fine control over light and privacy through the louvres. You can redirect low angle morning or evening sun without closing the window covering entirely. And they add an architectural quality to the space that transforms how the room looks and feels.

The combination of cellular roof blinds and side window shutters gives you the best of both: maximum insulation overhead where it matters most, and permanent adjustable control at eye level. We advise on the best combination during the home consultation.

Common Questions

Questions about conservatory blinds

How much do conservatory blinds cost?

It depends on the size and style of your conservatory, the number of roof panels, and whether you also want side window blinds. As a broad guide, a full set of motorised roof blinds for a typical domestic conservatory falls between £2,500 and £6,000 including VAT. Adding side window blinds increases that. The fastest way to get an accurate price is to send us a photo of your conservatory with rough dimensions. Get in touch.

Do conservatory roof blinds need wiring?

It depends on the motor system. Battery powered options require no wiring and no electrician. For larger conservatories with many panels, mains powered motors are often the better choice because they eliminate the need to recharge batteries in hard to reach locations. We can coordinate with your electrician if mains power is the right option.

Will blinds make my conservatory dark?

Not with translucent fabric. The translucent option filters and softens the light beautifully while still reducing heat. The conservatory stays bright and airy, just without the harsh glare and extreme temperatures. Room darkening fabric is available if you need it, but most conservatory installations use translucent.

Can you fit blinds to an older conservatory?

Yes. We retrofit blinds to conservatories of any age. The guide wire system is fixed to the glazing bars of your existing structure. No modifications to the conservatory itself are needed. We survey every installation to check suitability and identify any considerations before placing the order.

How long does fitting take?

A typical conservatory with six to eight roof panels takes one day. Larger or more complex structures may take a day and a half. Our own fitting team does the installation, not subcontractors. We programme all the motorisation during the visit so everything is working before we leave.
