Investing your hard-earned money in window shutters is a big decision, but one you won’t regret. Shutters are the perfect finishing touch in any room. They provide you with flexible privacy and light control, better insulation and noise management, and look stylish, timeless and elegant.

And with the cost of living on the rise, it’s more important than ever to look after things well to prolong their lifespan. Especially things which get a lot of use, such as window coverings. You can slow down the natural progression of wear and tear by following our expert advice below…

How To Clean Your Window Shutters

Shutter fitting

Following your shutter fitting, we advise you to clean your new shutters regularly to keep your shutters looking great and working well.

You should always use the correct cleaning product for the material of your shutters and avoid using a multipurpose cleaner, as they can cause discolouration.

If you’re using a cloth, a clean microfiber cloth is best. They produce static electricity that picks up dust and dirt particles, unlike most dusters that just spread it. They’re also extremely gentle, so are unlikely to scratch the surface of your shutters.

The most effective way to dust shutters is in a smooth motion in a single direction along the slats. If you’ve chosen natural wood, try to go with the grain for a sleek finish.

You should avoid using any cloth or sponge with a scratchy surface and scrubbing hard and circular motions, as this is likely to cause damage.

We always recommend cleaning with a cloth over vacuuming. However, you can use a low-power setting with the soft upholstery attachment if you’re short on time. Please remember that using a vacuum on full power with a hard-ended attachment isn’t advised.

How To Maintain Electric Window Shutters

Motorised window shutters are becoming more popular because of their practicality, convenience and accessibility. Following your shutter fitting, cleaning them isn’t dissimilar to  cleaning manual shutters.-Electric Shutters.

  • Dust or vacuum top to bottom, remembering to be gentle and use a soft, non-scratchy cloth or attachment. A dry (rubber) sponge on fabric or vinyl removes dust and dirt with no water or soap.
  • To keep your tracking mechanism moving smoothly, you can use a silicone lubricant spray, being sure to follow the instructions as directed. Try to avoid getting any on the actual shutters in case of staining.

If you feel unsure how to maintain your electric shutters, you can always ask us for expert advice.
