The Straight Answer

Yes, we still make them in real wood

Most shutters sold in the UK today are composite or engineered MDF. That is fine for many windows, but it is not what you came here looking for. If you specifically want real wood, you have two genuine options with us. Our Fiji range is 100% Paulownia hardwood throughout. Our Cuba range uses hardwood louvres on an engineered frame, giving you the timber feel where it matters most at a more accessible price.

Real wooden shutters can be stained as well as painted. They can be sanded and refinished decades from now. They can be manufactured to any window shape, including arched, circular, triangular, and bow windows. And with normal care, they will outlast almost any other window covering in your home.

Full Hardwood

Fiji — 100% Paulownia hardwood throughout

Fiji is our premium wooden shutter range, manufactured entirely from Paulownia hardwood. Paulownia is the hardwood of choice for shutter makers because it is lightweight enough to operate easily on large panels, dimensionally stable so it will not warp over time, and it takes paint and stain finishes beautifully.

Every component is solid hardwood. The frame, the louvres, the stiles, the rails. No MDF, no engineered substitutes, no compromise. This is the same product specification you would find in the highest-end shutter installations anywhere in the world.

Because Fiji is full hardwood, it can be sanded and refinished decades later. If you want to change colour in fifteen years, you can. That flexibility is not possible with any composite or engineered shutter, and it is one of the reasons Fiji is genuinely a long-term investment rather than a disposable window covering.

Finish Options

Wood you can stain, not just paint

Most shutter ranges only come in painted finishes. If you want to see the natural wood grain showing through, you need real timber. Fiji gives you that option.

30

Paint colours

From classic whites through to contemporary darks and warm naturals.

24

Stain finishes

Natural-wood stains that show the grain. Popular in period properties and traditional rooms.

Custom colours

Match any RAL number or Farrow and Ball shade exactly. The only range that allows this.

Shaped Windows

Two ranges that fit any window shape

Arched windows, circular portholes, triangular gable ends, bow windows, angled apex windows. Anything other than a plain rectangle.

Two of our ranges handle shaped openings. Fiji is our premium full Paulownia hardwood range, available in paint or stain finishes. Boston is our mid-tier painted range, with hardwood louvres on an engineered MDF frame. Cuba cannot be made to shapes. If your home has a window shape that has always been awkward to dress, choose Fiji for stained or premium hardwood, or Boston for painted at a more accessible price.

We measure shaped windows in person. Templates, photographs, and exact angles are taken on site, and the shutter is then made to those specific dimensions.

Best Seller

Cuba — hardwood louvres without full hardwood pricing

Cuba is our most popular shutter range across Scotland, and for good reason. It uses real hardwood for the louvres, which are the parts you see, touch, and adjust every day. The frame is engineered MDF, which keeps the price down without affecting how the shutter looks or feels in use.

From normal viewing distance, most people cannot tell Cuba apart from full hardwood Fiji. The paint finish is smooth and consistent, the louvres operate identically, and the overall appearance is excellent. Cuba is the right choice for customers who want real wood louvres at a more realistic budget for whole-house projects.

Cuba is limited to standard rectangular windows and 12 colour options. If you need shaped windows, choose Boston for painted or Fiji for paint or stain. For a wider colour palette, choose Fiji.

Where wooden shutters work best

Living rooms and bedrooms

The rooms you spend the most time in are the rooms most worth investing in real timber. The warmth, weight, and feel of hardwood are noticeable every day.

Period properties and Georgian homes

Sash windows, deep reveals, original architecture. Stained or painted hardwood respects the building and complements the existing features.

Shaped, arched, and bay windows

Our Fiji (full Paulownia hardwood) and Boston (hardwood louvres on MDF frame) ranges can both be cut to non-rectangular shapes. Cuba cannot. If your window is unusual, real timber is the answer.

Where wooden shutters do not belong

Bathrooms, shower rooms, wet rooms, and kitchens near a sink or hob. Humidity and timber are long-term enemies. For those windows we recommend our waterproof Java range, which is 100% ABS and will not warp regardless of moisture. You can mix materials room by room and still have a consistent look.

Common Questions

Frequently asked questions

Are these real wooden shutters or composite?
Both, depending on the range. Our Fiji range is 100% Paulownia hardwood throughout, including the frame, louvres, and stiles. Our Cuba range uses real hardwood louvres on an engineered MDF frame, which gives you a genuine timber feel at a lower price. If you specifically want full hardwood, choose Fiji.
What wood are wooden shutters made from?
Our Fiji range is made from Paulownia, a hardwood prized in shutter manufacturing because it is lightweight, dimensionally stable, and takes paint and stain finishes beautifully. Cuba uses hardwood louvres on an engineered frame. We do not use cheap pine or generic softwoods.
Can wooden shutters be stained rather than painted?
Yes. The Fiji range offers 24 stain finishes that let the natural wood grain show through, alongside 30 paint colours and full custom colour matching to any RAL or Farrow and Ball shade. Stained finishes are popular for traditional rooms, period properties, and customers who want the warmth of real timber visible.
How long do wooden shutters last?
With normal care, our Fiji hardwood shutters last 50 years or more. They can also be sanded and refinished decades later if you want to change colour or refresh the look. This is something no other material can do.
Can I have wooden shutters in a bathroom?
We do not recommend it. Real timber and humid environments do not mix well over the long term. For bathrooms, shower rooms, and wet rooms we recommend our Java range, which is 100% waterproof. You can mix materials room by room and still keep a consistent look across the house.
How much do wooden shutters cost?
Fiji full hardwood shutters start from £768 per window, fully fitted by our own team. Cuba hardwood louvre shutters start from £646 per window. Prices include measurement, manufacture, delivery, and installation with VAT. We provide a written quotation after a complimentary home consultation.
Can wooden shutters be made for arched or shaped windows?
Yes. Two of our ranges can be made to any window shape, including arched, circular, triangular gable ends, and bow windows. Fiji is our full Paulownia hardwood range, available in paint or stain finishes. Boston is our mid-tier painted range, with hardwood louvres on an engineered MDF frame. Cuba is limited to standard rectangular windows.
